Bumped into this problem today with MSSQLSERVER service stuck at “starting” status. Here is the original article with illustrative screen shots, I am going a bit “roughly speaking” below:
- Open a command window by pressing windows key + R
- Type “sc queryex MSSQLSERVER” to get basic info about this service
- Identify the PID of this MSSQLSERVER service
- Type “taskkill /f /pid [pid_number]” to terminate the hung process
- Type “net start MSSQLSERVER” to restart the service
